A Unique Masterpiece

This lace masterwork was designed and hand-crafted by Colette Van Steyvoort and awarded to Mrs. William Bowen Astrop in appreciation for her many years of volunteer efforts for the International Lace Biennials in Brussels. The Biennial was organized under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Fabiola of Belgium.

Mrs. Van Steyvoort, a Master Lacemaker, also founded and directed the Atelier for Contemporary Lace in Brussels. Her works are exhibited in private collections, embassies and museums worldwide. She is known for her extensive publication on the “Initiation of the Creation of Lace.” In 1983, she received the Grand Prize Queen Fabiola for the entire collection of her works during the first Lace Biennial.

The lace creation you see here is a contemporary piece of Duchesse Lace. It was made in parts and then arranged and connected to form the whole. In this case, the central flower was created as one piece, and the adjoining elements were added around the edge. Although often an option with this type of lace, a ground or ‘reseau’ was not added here.

Mrs. Van Steyvoort made a similar piece which she gifted to Princess Astrid of Belgium.
